NZ firearms licence · theory test practice

Ready for your firearms licence theory test?

I’m Scott, a Kiwi hunter and former Mountain Safety Council firearms safety instructor. I built this to help my daughter get ready for her test. I hope it helps you too.

FAL Ready is practice for the theory test you sit on the firearms safety course. Thirty questions in thirty minutes, like the real test. The seven rules until you can say them. Every answer explained, with where it comes from.

Free to try, no account. NZ$9.99 once unlocks everything. iPhone and iPad, iOS 18 or later.

Independent: not made or endorsed by Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand (FSE), New Zealand Police or the Mountain Safety Council.

What’s inside

Swipe or scroll across. They’re the same pictures you’ll see on the App Store.

Ready for your theory test? The start screen, with Scott's note about building it for his daughter. All seven, word for word. The recital, each rule marked word for word or right idea. 30 questions, 30 minutes. A timed mock on question 1 with the timer running. Train to 28 out of 30. A mock result of 28 out of 30, marked At our standard. Know why, not just what. An answer marked right, with its explanation and source. Short cards, one at a time. The recap card for rule 4. Written for the Arms Act 2026. The storage recap card with FSE's note about updated guidance. Missed one? It comes back. A wrong answer with the right one shown. By a former firearms safety instructor. Checked against the law, independent, no account.

A daily review

About 40 questions a day, each one brought back just before you’d be likely to forget it, then new ones from your weakest topic. Miss a day and nothing resets.

Unlock

Your readiness score

One number out of 100, from your mocks, the seven rules, what you’ve covered and your weakest topic, with exactly what’s holding it back. It stays at 60 or under until you’ve mastered all seven rules, and it never says “pass”.

Your licence, step by step

Every stage from checking you can apply to your first firearm and finding a mentor, written from FSE’s own pages, with the links you need. An age check, a referee checker, the course-booking email ready to send, checklists, and reminders you choose. Free, you can see every step at a glance.

Free

Badges, and a card to share

Your first mock, the seven rules recited, days practised. A badge or a practice-test result makes a card you can send, and nothing leaves the app unless you tap Share.

On iPad too, with the same unlock and, through your own iCloud, the same progress.

Free to try. NZ$9.99 once for the rest.

No subscription and no ads. Family Sharing is on, so one unlock covers a parent and a teenager working towards their licences together.

The pass mark

FSE doesn’t publish the theory test pass mark. In the tests Scott supervised under the old system, the pass was 28 out of 30, and any Seven Rules question wrong failed you.

FAL Ready trains you to that standard. A mock with 28 or more, and every Seven Rules question right, is marked At our standard. It never says “pass”, because only the real test can.

Who’s behind it

Just me, in Christchurch. Every question is checked against the Firearms Safety Code, the Arms Act 2026 or the Arms Regulations 2026, and none goes in the app until I’ve read and approved it. No account, no ads, no tracking: your progress stays on your iPhone or iPad and in your own iCloud.
