Built to help my daughter get ready for her test

I’m Scott, a Kiwi hunter and former Mountain Safety Council firearms safety instructor. I built this to help my daughter get ready for her test. I hope it helps you too.

What I saw at the theory test

As an instructor I supervised people sitting the firearms licence theory test under the old Arms Act. It was 30 multiple-choice questions. The pass was 28, and any Seven Rules question wrong failed you, whatever else you got right.

So the app puts the seven rules first. You drill them, put them in order, then recite all seven. Word for word gets a tick. The right idea in your own words gets a tick. Leaving out a key part is marked wrong, the way I’d have marked it.

Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand (FSE), which runs licensing now, doesn’t publish a pass mark, so the app never says “pass”. A mock with 28 or more and every Seven Rules question right is marked At our standard. That’s my standard, from the tests I watched. Nothing more official than that.

How the questions are made

There are 175, every one written for the app and checked against its source: the Firearms Safety Code, the Arms Act 2026, the Arms Regulations 2026 or one of FSE’s pages. None goes in until I’ve read it and approved it. The Code was written before the 2026 law, so where the law has changed, mostly storage and transport, the questions follow the new law.

Think one’s wrong? Email support@huntfix.app with the question and where you read otherwise. I’d rather hear it.

What it isn’t

It isn’t official, and it isn’t the course. FSE’s course and its free e-learning are where you learn this; FAL Ready is where you practise. It doesn’t track you either: no account, no ads, and your progress stays on your iPhone or iPad and in your own iCloud.
